Steps to Online Class Success
As the winter semester comes to an end we start the summer term with a better idea as to what it will entail. Online classes have allowed us to continue our studies in these uncertain times. For some, these class changes have been difficult to adapt to with live online classes or videos posted of lectures for everyone to watch at their own pace. Many people find themselves less motivated, or falling behind on lectures, and assignments leading to higher stress levels. Luckily, no one is going through this alone. We are all here to support one another and get through these changes together as a community. On that note, we have compiled our top 5 tips to help you succeed in your online summer classes.
1. Create a routine.
Although sleeping all day may sound tempting, it is important to keep somewhat of a routine to ensure you do not fall into a slump. Decide on a reasonable time you are going to wake up at, a time you want to eat breakfast and lunch by, and make sure to set aside time for studying and class. Although you may not have classes everyday it is important to hold yourself accountable to this schedule so that on the days you do, you are productive and do not sleep through them. Luckily, you won’t have to take an hour long OC Transpo ride to get into school!
2. Put your phone in another room during lectures/class time.
This is a good habit to get into when doing online classes to eliminate distractions. With your notifications going off from social media, texts or even games it could be tempting to sit on your phone the whole lecture. This means you miss out on valuable information that could help you on your midterms or finals. By limiting distractions you are doing yourself a favour to ensure you get all information provided by the prof and increasing your chances at success.
3. Change locations.
Although you may be stuck at home there are ways to change scenery. For example, instead of working in your bedroom all day try and move to the kitchen or living room, or even outside as the weather improves. This will force you to get up, move and will help your mind think of new ideas with the different sights, smells and sounds.
4. Get dressed.
Even though this may seem simple, getting dressed can make a significant difference. We all know how tempting it may be to sit in your pajamas all day, trust me we have all done it a few times, it tricks your mind into thinking it's time to sleep and relax. But, when you are trying to get work done, those distracting thoughts may steer you away from being productive. Simply changing clothing can set the tone for the day and tell your body it’s time to get down to work. You don’t have to get into jeans or a super nice outfit, but just getting out of the clothing you slept in will do the trick.
5. Eat well.
It may be easy to just eat chips and popcorn all day as a snack but those actually make your body more lethargic. The salts and sugars in some of our favourite snacks create an energy crash. To combat that it is important you are eating good sugars to increase your energy such as fruit and veggies. By getting a proper mix of good sugars and protein into your system you will have an ample amount of energy to get you through the school day.
